Honouring immigrant daughters for Queen of Glory

Aim: Support the launch of Nana Mensah’s film, Queen of Glory, with artwork that explores what the film means to the daughters of immigrants.

Audience: First-generation immigrant daughters

Clients: Dark Matter Marketing and Bohemia Media UK

Artistic solution: To honour the first feature film from writer/director/actor Nana Mensah, Queen of Glory — a follow-up on the classic immigrant's tale — , I was commissioned to create an artwork that explores what the film means to immigrant daughters.

For me, it’s a poised power that straddles the traditional and the modern; understanding the strength of our ancestors and imagining our own liberation.

As part of Bohemia Media’s nationwide festival celebrating Black cinema, Who We Are, screenings featured a display of my papercut portrait in lobbies, adorning bunting and flyers.

Project date: August 2022

“I think all first-generation daughters need to see this film to begin our collective healing process, like therapy.” Nana Mensah, for Vogue.
