Rehearsing Community Health Justice | Launch of Community Archival Artworks

walworth living room healing justice london

I am inviting you to view and contribute your wisdom to a quilt archiving healing strategies.

These past few months, I've had the incredible privilege of becoming a health researcher bringing together my experiences of living with a long term mental health condition, mindful art facilitation and storytelling to engage the community of Walworth. Over 10 workshops, I have been holding space for conversations of health, wellbeing, joy and safety and archiving responses of the participants in a quilt that is vibrating with healing strategies and wisdom. This is one research strand that informs Pembroke House's wider strategy to support the community to articulate and co-create their social model for health in collaboration with Healing Justice London (HJL) Justice London.

I am not a quilt maker! I designed this project to remove my "authority" as an artist researcher, encourage all forms of expression, include all abilities, ages and to practice listening, respect and communication. We decided to call it "Weaving Interdependence" as our individual health is inextricably bound in our collective health.

I would love for you to attend the launch of "Rehearsing Community Health Justice" on Wednesday 6pm-8.30pm and you can add to the quilt on the day! Let's talk health and create some wellbeing together 💗

Phenomenal artist Jacob V Joyce also led a research workshop programme, called "Collective Remedies" and they will be revealing their artwork too!

Njabala Annual Exhibition: Holding Space from 8 March to 8 April 2023

"Njabala: Holding Space is an exhibition about the efforts to rest and organize time in a world designed to constantly exploit women. Inspired by Njabala folklore's portrayal of Njabala as the “lazy girl”, the exhibition explores (mis)interpretations of rest, care and labor, especially in a Ugandan context. Ugandan artist Pamela Enyonu as well as the three artists who were accepted for the Annual Njabala Open Call of 2021 namely Birungi Kawooya, Mable Akeu and Pepita Biraaro have been reflecting on the themes through 2022 and have made new works for the exhibition."

You Made A Fool Of Death With Your Beauty

I am so excited to be holding a free collage #workshop inspired by the gorgeous cover art of the new Akwaeke Emezi book, You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty on Saturday 28 May in Brixton! The book was sensational, heart wrenching, sexxxyy and tragic. I love feeling many things and Emezi portrayed the complexity and messiness of life, love and death.
